Welcome to Mechanicsville, a historic neighbourhood just off the river.

Mechanicsville was most likely named after the blue-collar workers who originally lived there, building the wood-frame homes you still see in the area.

  • Mechanicsville was originally populated by around 30 French-Canadian families in the late 1800s. Most of the original residents worked at the mills and built their own houses.

  • Mechanicsville has a population of around 2500 people as of 2021.

However, if you’re interested in a full shopping experience, it is a short drive down to the Rideau Centre in the Byward Market, Carlingwood Shopping Centre up near Carlington, or St. Laurent closer to Vanier.

  • Mechanicsville doesn’t have many designated landmarks, although while visiting, there is the old house owned by one of the original resident families - the Vachons, whom an apartment building is now named after.

Across the bridge into the Ottawa River is the Giant Gate Valve, however, which is a historical landmark!
