Stittsville was first settled by Irish soldiers in the 1820s. It is named after Jackson Stitt, the first postmaster in the area. It was originally called the township of Goulbourn.
The entire town was destroyed in 1870 by the Great Carleton Fire.

Stittsville is a self-sufficient suburb, and you can purchase everything you need right in the area or beside it in Kanata. The main shopping centre in the area is the Jackson Trails Centre, but you can also check out the Stittsville Shopping Centre, Main Street Mall, The Shoppes at Fairwinds, Crossing Bridge Square, and Grant Crossing.
